STAWELL, 2019-

Stawell is a gold mining town in the Wimmera region of Victoria. Here the earth begins to yellow and redden until further west the land settles into vast flatness, eventually becomes desert. My parents live in this town.

In late November 2019 my mother became seriously ill. There were silent vigils and expanses of hopelessness; weeks of uncertainty. I walked the town more than I ever had previously. The fire haze that engulfed southeastern Australia concurrently hadn't presented itself in Stawell, but in my mental state, the camera an accomplice to it. My mother survived the destructive summer.
